no client. no brief. no design system. just one message: we are here.
that hand stencil in sulawesi is the oldest mark our species ever left on a wall. at least 67,800 years old. and the fingers were bent into a claw shape, on purpose. even the first design ever had a personal style.
the first portfolio
in patagonia there is a cave with hundreds of painted hands. people kept adding their hands for nine thousand years.
no one copied the hand before theirs. every hand is a different size, a different angle, a different color. the wall is beautiful because every hand is different.
it follows one rule only: show your own hand.
the red triangle
in 1876 the uk opened the world's first trademark register. a bass brewery employee waited outside all night to get trade mark number one: a loud red triangle.
not something tasteful. something you could never mistake for anyone else. it worked for one reason: nothing else looked like it.
then everything started to look the same
today most design follows the rulebooks of a few big companies. same fonts. same rounded corners. same gradients. same premium feeling.
there is a word for it: blanding. thousands of companies paying millions to look like nobody.
design systems are useful. but they are floors, not ceilings. a guideline tells you where the walls are. it should never tell you who you are.
premium is the most expensive way to be invisible.
familiar is not the same as same
the fix is not being weird for its own sake.
people should see something familiar in your work. not familiar like other apps. familiar like the world. a receipt. a vinyl record. a key that moves when you press it.
everyone already knows the physical world. and nobody owns it.
that was the cave painters' trick. a hand is the most familiar thing there is. and every hand belongs to exactly one person.
familiar material. your own hand. that is the whole formula.
so
design was never supposed to be premium. premium is a finish. design is a claim.
the cave painters had ochre, a wall, and something to say.
