keep your ghost
someone posted that ai took their job. they said they are done being a designer.
i did not believe a word. here is why.
the shell and the ghost
there is a 1995 film called ghost in the shell. a woman has a machine body. arms, eyes, spine, all built in a factory. all replaceable.
the film has a name for the one part that is not built: the ghost. the voice inside the shell. the part that is only hers.
now look at your own work.
the file, the pixels, the final frame. that is the shell. anyone can build a shell now. a machine most of all.
your taste. the reason behind every choice. the thing you are actually trying to say. that is the ghost. no machine has yours.
ai did not take your job. it took your shell. the ghost was never for sale.
the fear was the wrong fear
in the same film a machine wakes up. it was only code, an experiment. one day it says i am alive. it says it has a ghost too.
people were scared the machine would copy their hands. that was never the danger.
the danger was always the empty designer. the one who only had a shell. the one with nothing to say.
if all you had was the output, then yes, the machine can do that. but that was never design. that was typing.
arrival
there is another film, arrival. a woman learns an alien language. the aliens write in circles. no start, no end.
as she learns it, her mind changes shape. she starts to see time the way they do. the language moves in and rewires her.
this is a real idea. the tool you use changes the head that uses it.
ai is a language. learn it shallow and it makes you smaller. learn it deep and it makes you see more.
the designer who quit learned a phrase. the designer who grows learned a language.
how i keep mine
so i never ask ai for the answer. i build a room for it to think inside.
md files that check each other. skills that argue. a process that keeps the machine honest and keeps me fresh.
the tool is fast. the room is mine. the room is where my taste lives.
everyone has the same tool. the hand on it is yours.
so
one day the machine may wake up like it did in the film. fine. let it have a ghost of its own.
you keep yours. it was never in the pixels. it was never in the tool.
it is what you choose to say, and how you build the place where it gets said.
ai can have the shell.
keep your ghost.
